Pothu Trees Plantation in Thiruvannamalai district

Introduction to "Pothu" Trees :

https://responsiblecitizensiyakkam.blogspot.in

" Pothu" Trees are Trees which are grown from the branches of a tree.

Trees which spews milk when cut are ideal for making the Pothu Trees like Banyan ( Ala maram ),
Peepul ( arasa maram) , Vatha Narayan ( Vatha arasu) , Poova arasu & the famous Drum Stick ( Murunga maram ) are ideal for Pothu maram. Maram is a Tamizh (Tamil) word for TREE.

If we grow a seed of a tree - it is practically very difficult to protect from farm animals, human beings & nature's fury.  So growing from a seed survival rate is quite low to become a fully grown tree.
In today's fast food world, people are impatient to wait for Long time to measure growth but Nature's Nature is to grow steadily at a leisure pace.

For better survival & quicker greenery - Pothu is an option. Though the tree from the seed is the strongest as it has all the different types of roots, whereas POTHU trees has more "salli Ver " ( Root type) than the deep roots which come naturally from the seeds.

Why POTHU tree is need of the hour ?

The Thiruvannamalai district of Tamilnadu, South India is an typical example- where more & more forests have been cut for wood & most part of the Hilly district have become barren resulting to make it a hot district driving out the villagers from the district. Migration is one of the highest in Tamilnadu & also in India.

Villagers remaining back in villages are in to farming & goat rearing for livelihood.
Farming is dwindling as most of the district have become dry- main rivers flowing through the district like cheyyaru, Then Pennai have not seen water barring few months during heavy floods which occurs in once in 10 years as it happened in November- December 2015.

Cheyyaru which is originating from Jawathu Hills in Thiruvannamalai district itself has not seen water for most part of the year as the resident of the hills have become notorious in cutting & felling the trees. The hill has become hotter & it is no longer able to stop the clouds without the tree cover as the trees which condense the cloud in to rain is no longer existing.

Urgent need is WATER  for sustenance of living

Growing Trees from seed takes longer time & protecting the sapling from goats & harsh hot climate is quite a task.  In Tamilnadu for the last one decade or so from 2000 at least many people, organisations have done tremendous efforts to plant trees.

But rate of cutting  fully grown trees are so high that even same number of young plants being planted are no match to give the cover & Earth is becoming hotter & many part of TN is becoming unbearably hot to live. Global warming is a global phenomenon but Tamilnadu being closer to equator receives SUN's heat aplenty throughout the year ( it is actually a great blessing to someone from cold countries like Canada, Norway, Greenland, Iceland etc..) - but the sweat, heat strokes makes the living under the hot sun unbearable. Thiruvannamalai district people are mostly seen in road laying projects in Tamilnadu & adjacent Andhra, Karnataka as they are able bear the hot tar better than other districts peoples of TN & people from this district is used to work in tough hard soil conditions compared to other districts due to water scarcity & barren hills.

Everyday about 15000 peoples are moving out of this district to big cities like Chennai , Bengaluru, Tiruppur for making a living.

so faster we get big trees on the hills - we can make the district cooler than it is now & stop the clouds which are now bye-passing the hills of Thiruvannamalai to condense in the taller hills in neighboring state of Karnataka & getting water from Karnataka is more difficult than getting it from Himalayas itself.

So POTHU trees are the important option though germination from seed will also simultaneously carried by making seed balls to be sown on every hills of Thiruvannamalai.

1st baby step has been taken to plant pothu trees in one lake @ Malkapur, Thandrampet Taluk, Thiruvannamalai district in August 2016 .

The Pothu trees - four Banyan branches in Malkapur, nine of Vatha Narayanan on Mothakkal to Melpachchaar road planted on 6th August 2016 - now on 20th Sep 2016 - one Banyan pothu tree & 6 vatha narayanan pothu trees have sprung with new leaves sprouting out.

Local Farmer Mr. Eswaran of Malayanoor chekkadi is instrumental in ensuring pothu are cut & planted & Mr. Marangalanavan gave all the necessary trechnical inputs & guidance based on his experience & he came all the way travelling to see the trees growing. Mr. Jegam Radha Krishnan of Trees & environment protection association is a great inspiration for this work at his age with lot of enthusiasm.

Now the next step is to grow it in many hills of thiruvannamalai district.
